Homework & Working Habits
Get ready for Middle School!
There is homework everyday including Fridays.
Read 20 to 30 minutes everyday
and write a well-written sentence from the reading in your reading log.
( A sentence with more than seven common nouns, action verbs, and/or unusual transition words/coordinators)
Tip: go to sleep early and read in bed
Please, ensure that your child is reading 4th grade books or articles EVERY DAY.
A Cat In The Hat, Dog Man, Diary of A Wimpy Kid, Dorky Diaries, or Captain Underpants
are surely NOT enhancing your child's education. The sentences and the vocabulary are very poor.
They can select books or magazines from the classroom or the school library.
Once they start a book or an article, they must finish it (or return the book after reading it for five days)
Ask daily to read the sentence they selected and typed on their reading log.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Allow about one hour for completion
(depending on the child’s ability and focus!)
Therefore, if students finish the math in 15 minutes and
all left to do is the writing, it implies that
Mrs. Lee expects the class to spend 45 minutes on the writing.
Clear, meaningful writing is expected. We must check, improve, rewrite.
Homework is mandatory and must be turned in on time.
A Grade for homework completion/neatness (not correctness.)
It is the student’s responsibility:
- to check if he/she has all necessary paperwork to complete the homework
(silent time is given in class to write down homework and check.)
- to makeup work after being absent.

As a concerned parent, please participate in the following ways:
1. Check on homework daily.
Don’t correct it, just check if the child tried his/her best.
2. Praise your child for acceptable work.
3. Sign the Planner and the Reading Log.
You may explain directions.
You can guide
(ask the child questions or give similar examples to help him figure out the answers,)
but you can’t provide the solutions.
If your child didn’t understand the material,
you may re-explain the material if you can
or just write a quick note to the teacher. This really helps!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The homework given falls into one or more of the four categories:
1. Reading at least 20 minutes DAILY: practice in reading.
2. Extended practice: to strengthen skills or strategies introduced in the classroom
3. Research: often given on an extended-time basis.
4. Review: preparing for a test or presentation.
5. Remedial Drill: designed to help strengthen the child’s weak areas.
